Ash Martins

Women + TNB Empowerment Self-Defense Instructor
Biography

Ash has been part of the Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) Program since 2019, first as a student, then as a teaching assistant before becoming certified to teach ESD workshops and ten-week classes. When they first enrolled for the class in 2019 as a student, they wondered what on earth could be taught over the course of ten weeks, assuming that self-defense concepts would just entail some kicking and punching. Their eyes were opened to a whole new world of self-defense that offers a more holistic, inclusive approach, and they were hooked on the material and how life-changing the course was!

Ash is passionate about empowering others to live holistic, healthy lives in whatever form that might take given each person's unique experience in life—a theme which has been consistent throughout their career. They have a unique background, having worked at nonprofits, in academia, corporate America, and industry. Ash was a nontraditional student and studied psychology and sociology at Lane Community College and the University of Oregon, with a particular interest in prevention science, as well as environmental sociology.

Outside of work, Ash has a really cute tuxedo cat that she loves to snuggle and read books or watch silly TV shows with. They also have a wonderful partner and two kiddos with whom they love to play word games and go for adventure walks with.
